South Korea’s largest automaker Hyundai Motor Co. together with local car-sharing startup Luxi will launch a commuting carpool service and cooperate to develop innovative mobility technologies that would reshape the car sharing industry.

Hyundai Motor said on Tuesday that it will join hands with Luxi to develop a carpooling algorithm and system using advanced technologies such as autonomous driving and artificial intelligence.

Luxi is Korean carpool service app operator that has successfully matched 4 million carpool drivers and riders in the country since its inception in 2016. It currently has 200,000 registered vehicles and 780,000 members. In August, Hyundai Motor invested 5 billion won ($4.6 million) in Luxi.

As part of the new project, the two companies will start a pilot carpool program that will allow participants to lease Hyundai Motor’s hybrid sedan Ioniq and make lease payments with profits from sharing the vehicle. The program will run with 100 participants who will drive the Ioniq, and Luxi will manage the overall carpool service operation such as matching people and calculating fares.

Hyundai Motor and Luxi also plan on developing new mobility technologies such as robot-driven taxi and delivery services.
