Jeju Air Co. will start servicing flights to Kagoshima, the eighth destination in Japan to be served by the South Korean budget carrier, accelerating its foray into the Japanese market.

Jeju Air said on Tuesday it will launch a new flight to Kagoshima, the southernmost major city of Kyushu, with a route to be operated three times a week on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. The first flight to the new destination in Japan will take off on Jan. 6, 2018, and the one-way flight is estimated to take about an hour and a half, the company said.

Kagoshima is the eighth destination in Japan for the carrier, and the Incheon-Kagoshima route is the 13th between Korea and Japan. Jeju Air currently flies a fleet of 12 aircrafts to seven cities in Japan including Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka, Sapporo, Okinawa and Matsuyama.

Kagoshima, a popular tourist destination among Koreans who love to play golf, is renowned for beautiful nature in Yakushima and various tourist attractions like hot springs in Ibusuki and Mount Kirishima.

Jeju Air flied aircrafts with a total of 1.966 million seats in 2016, up 47 percent from a year ago. The number has already been exceeded with 2.36 million from January to October, and 90 percent of the seats on average were occupied, an official at the carrier said.

Shares of Jeju Air Tuesday closed at 36,000 won, unchanged from the previous session.
