KSV, a global esports team company, announced on Friday it has acquired Samsung Galaxy, the oldest running esports team in South Korea, which recently won the big League of Legends (LoL) world championship title.
The acquisition of the South Korean team gives KSV control of four major esports teams across household games such as League of Legends, Heroes of the Storm, and Battleground.
League of Legends, a multiplayer online battle arena game, developed by American video game publisher Riot Games, is one of the most popular esports games in the world.
Samsung Galaxy won the 2017 League of Legends World Championship held in Beijing this year.
KSV said the team’s superb capability and the excellent teamwork in winning the 2017 LoL world championship were the most important factor behind its acquisition.
Samsung Galaxy earned fame after winning big name competitions since its founding in 2000, but Samsung Electronics began to downsize its sponsorship after vice chairman Jay Y. Lee virtually ruled the country`s largest conglomerate.
Samsung Electronics stopped its sponsorship for the World Cyber Games in 2013 and sold the rights to the WCG brand to Smilegate early this year. The WCG had been promoted as the “Olympics of esports,” and ran from 2000 to 2013 as an annual competition before the transaction.
