Hyundai Rotem Co.’s train cars for Hyderabad Metro Rail in India began operation on Thursday.

Hyundai Rotem, a locomotive and rolling stock unit of South Korea’s Hyundai Motor Group, held an opening ceremony of the Hyderabad’s first subway at Miyapur Station in Hyderabad, Telangana. The ceremony was attended by India’s prime minister Narendra Modi and Telangana Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan who participated in a test-run for four stations from Miyapur to Kukatpally.

Hyundai Rotem in 2012 won an order worth 264.4 billion won ($243 million) to supply 171 train cars for Hyderabad Metro Rail project. The first batch of 66 cars will run on a 30-kilometer-long line from Miyapur to Nagole, and the rest will be supplied in phases.

The Hyderabad subway running at a maximum speed of 80km per hour has an LCD map of subway line, four CCTV cameras and an emergency exit in each car. Hyundai Rotem plans to dispatch a team of three repairmen at each transfer station in case of malfunction.
