The South Korean government plans to lift regulations on remote control parking starting next year to give drivers sufficient time to park their cars using a remote control without worrying about electromagnetic interference.

The Ministry of Science and ICT said on Monday that it has amended the technical standard of radio station-use wireless equipment that can be set up without prior notice as part of efforts to accelerate the development of remote parking technology and related services. An administration notice of the amendment was give on November 17, the ministry said.

Under the previous standard, radio signal can be launched continuously for up to 90 seconds by a wireless device used for remote parking. The limit on time was placed to prevent wireless equipment from interfering overall electromagnetic wave.

Recent developments in radio wave technology, however, have dismissed concerns surrounding radio frequency interference and the ministry has decided to get rid of the 90 second time limit that has burdened drivers when parking cars using a remote control.

An unnamed official from the ministry said 90 seconds cannot be sufficient for drivers to park their cars using a remote control, particularly when it involves more complex parallel parking.

The ministry, however, will make it mandatory for vehicles with automated parking system to be equipped with the function of shutting down the parking system should there be electromagnetic interference.

The ministry plans to receive public opinion on the revised plan until January 16 before deliberation by the regulatory reform committee and going into force starting in the first half of next year.
