South Korea’s LG Innotek Co. Monday announced that it has developed the world’s first UV-C LED (Light Emitting Diode) that has an ultraviolet output of 100 mW for sterilization purposes.

The semiconductor-based light source also known as Deep UV LED was designed to have a short wavelength of 200-280 nm to destroy bacteria and cause chemical reaction for material curing.

The higher the optical output of the UV-C LED, the powerful the potential sterilization, but internal heating compromises quality. For this technical challenge, Japanese rivals had set around 2020 as their target year for full commercial development of the 100㎽ UV-C LED.

The new 100㎽ UV-C LED can emit sterilizing UV, 50 times stronger than a 2㎽ home-use product for 10,000 hours or longer, according to LG Innotek.

The company expects the new product to be widely used for applications, including household purifiers and air cleaners, as well as industrial water treatment and air conditioning systems in commercial buildings.

According to LED Inside, a market research firm, the global market for UV LEDs is expected to grow more than three folds from $166 million in 2016 to $526 million in 2020, driven by UV-C LEDs.
