Samsung Electronics Co. has acquired a voice-activated artificial intelligence (AI) platform developer Fluenty Inc., the first Korean startup in the AI sector the Korean tech giant has ever taken over.

Both companies did not disclose the value of the acquisition.

Founded in 2015, Fluenty has developed an AI-based platform called Fluenty.ai that enables anyone to create a customized chat bot, a computer program that converses with humans via auditory or textual methods to carry out orders by its users. Its mobile chat application Fluenty that offers a recommendation service for text reply based on machine learning technology is also available on Google Play Store.

In 2016, Fluenty was appointed to a beneficiary of Samsung Electronics’ startup incubating program, drawing attention from the company’s core development team.

Market insiders expect Samsung Electronics would work with Fluenty to upgrade and tune its voice-activated personal assistant Bixby.

Samsung Electronics has been aggressively seeking for acquisition targets in the AI industry at home and abroad. It took over a Silicon Valley-based AI platform provider Viv Labs in October last year. Viv Labs has taken part in developing digital assistant features for the Korean tech giant’s flagship smartphones.

In the recent years, Samsung Electronics has also acquired stakes in foreign startups with promising technologies to become software powerhouse. Its shopping list includes U.S. Internet of Things (IoT) company Smart Things, Canada’s mobile cloud company PrinterOn, U.S. mobile payment firm LoopPay, U.S. cloud service provider Joyent, next-generation messaging Rich Communications Services (RCS) provider NewNet Communication Technologies of Canada, and many more.
