Samsung Electronics Co., major global semiconductor and smartphone maker, has launched a new research center dedicated to promoting research on artificial intelligence (AI) technology to prepare for the era of fourth industrial revolution.

The company said on Wednesday that the new AI Center was set up under Samsung Research that was recently born by merging its Digital Media & Communications (DMC) R&D Center and Software Center. The latest changes in its research division comes as Samsung Electronics seeks to be more agile in responding to the rapidly changing market environment and increase management efficiency, the company said.

The tech giant also said it will reinforce the role of Sohn Young-kwon, president of Samsung Strategy & Innovation Center (SSIC), to speed up the company’s efforts to explore future business opportunities and respond to the rapidly changing environment driven by convergence among different industries.

Having seen the growth across its all business sectors, Samsung Electronics has decided to maintain consumer electronics, information technology and mobile, and device solutions as its three pillar businesses.

The company also said that it will pay special bonuses worth 400 percent of basic monthly salary to its chip unit staff for the first time in four years as the semiconductor arm is anticipated to post record earnings this year. The special bonus will be offered to about 40,000 employees. The last time they received a special bonus was in 2013 when all Samsung Electronics employees received offers in celebration to the 20th anniversary of its new management initiative.
