South Korea’s telecommunications giant KT Corp. and National Agricultural Cooperative Federation (Nonghyup) on Wednesday unveiled an automated self-checkout system for shoppers of fresh and frozen meat that saves the time of waiting for their cutting by human butchers.

On Wednesday, KT held a showcase event to launch its IoT Smart Sales System at Nonghyup headquarters in Jung District, central Seoul. The system is an automatic sales machine that allows consumers to buy fresh and frozen meat packages such as beef, pork, and marinated ones in small quantity. Once order is made, the IoT-topped machine packs 10 different types of meat products in small quantity of about 300 grams and offers them 20 percent cheaper than market price.

KT said that it applied radio circuit and smart payment system to the automatic sales machine that allows retailers to check conditions such as meat storage temperature and humidity as well as inventory in real time and also offers credit card and mobile payments.

KT and Nonghyup plan to install two self-checkout machines - one each at an outlet in Nonghyup headquarters and in Seodaemun, central Seoul - for test operations before setting up about 2,000 machines by 2020 at Nonghyup Hanaro Mart stores in Seoul and nearby areas with high concentration of single-member households and lacking separate butcher-serving fresh meat counters.

An unnamed official from KT said that the company plans to expand its IoT smart sales system in neighborhoods with many single-member and dual-income households and dual-incomers.
