A massive amount of imported vehicles equipped with Takata Corp.’s defective airbags will be recalled in South Korea, the latest development in a long-running safety crisis involving the Japanese company.
South Korea’s transport ministry said on Thursday a total of 9,543 vehicles of 20 models, including BMW`s X5 and X6 and Mercedes-Benz`s B200d, have faulty Takata airbags.
Of these, 8,189 vehicles of 15 models including BMW`s X5 3.0d SUV, are fitted with Takata airbags subject to a worldwide recall because the airbag inflator’s explosion is too powerful and can spray out sharp metal pieces into the cabin of the car.
Some 820 B200d vehicles from Mercedes-Benz are prone to catch fire due to overheating in current limiters, and 534 cars of four models including Mercedes-Benz’ E220d have faulty rear-seat safety belts, the ministry said.
The car importers should notify affected car owners of the recall and how to repair by e-mail or other ways. Those who already paid for car repair are eligible to receive compensation
