South Korea ranked second in this year`s ICT Development Index (IDI), the global composite index that measures a country’s ICT development, yielding the top place it kept for the last two years to Iceland.

According to Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT Thursday, Asia’s ICT powerhouse fell to the second in the IDI 2017 Rank on 176 nations. It was followed by Switzerland, Denmark and the United Kingdom.

The IDI has been published annually by the United Nations International Telecommunications Union since 2009. It compares and analyzes the level of information and communications technology development of countries.

The ICT Development Index analyzes 11 indicators in three clusters - ICT readiness (infrastructure and access), ICT use (intensity) and ICT capability (skills). Korea that ranked No.1 in 2015 and 2016 slid to the second place this year, coming in seventh in the readiness, fourth in the use, and second in the capability.

The Korean science ministry blamed the declining installation of landline telephone and network services for the country’s retreat in the ranking. An increase in wireless high-speed internet subscription in Iceland helped the country snatch the crown from Korea, it said.
