Seoul Semiconductor`s MicroDriver

Seoul Semiconductor, South Korea’s leading manufacturer of light emitting diodes (LED), released an ultra-small LED driver that can sharply reduce the size of lighting host and energy cost.

Its MicroDriver comes in a miniature package with a converter one-eighth size of existing peers by integrating control circuitry with the external driver. It supports lighting fixtures from 900 to 2,400 lumens. The size of the lightings can be further reduced as the device sits outside the fixture. It can be applied in both residential and commercial uses.

Seoul Semiconductor anticipates the new device to be a game-changer in the $3.6 billion LED driver market.

The MicroDriver operates not only on direct current but also on alternating current and high voltage as it incorporates the firm’s Acrich technology, the world’s first high-voltage AC-driven LED technology.

Flickering is below 10 percent so that it safely meets California Title 24, the world energy efficiency standard, which requires less than 30 percent flicker. It also provides more natural dimming functions.

Keith Hopwood, executive vice president of Seoul Semiconductor, expressed hope in the new MicroDriver as it would help lighting designers dramatically reduce the size, weight and volume of light fixtures.

As of 2:26 p.m., shares of Seoul Semiconductor were down 1.12 percent at 30,850 won ($27.70).
