A council consisting of more than 30 companies, research centers and universities was launched Thursday in Gumi, North Gyeongsang Province, to promote development of the Korea’s carbon industry.

The world’s largest carbon fiber producer Toray Advanced Materials Korea Inc., Busung Textec Co., Gumi Electronics & Information Technology Research Institute, Kumoh National Institute of Technology, Chungnam National University and others have joined the council to cooperate in fostering the carbon business in Korea.

The council will work to enhance the country’s competitiveness in the carbon business, develop and commercialize carbon technology and come up with mid- to long-term roadmap. “We will contribute to the development of the nation’s carbon industry by forging a network for close collaboration with each other,” said Park Seo-jin, head of the council and director of Toray Advanced Materials Korea.

South Korea has been putting efforts to foster the carbon industry. A project to establish a carbon business cluster in Gumi passed the government’s feasibility test last year. It also aims to construct a certification center for commercialization of carbon fiber parts in Gumi by 2022.
