South Korea’s state-run utility company Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO) has established additional a 140-megawatt (MW) energy storage systems (ESS) for frequency regulation at four sites including the substations in Gimje, North Jeolla Province and in Sokcho, Gangwon Province.
KEPCO has now become the world’s largest operator of ESS for frequency regulation with a total capacity of 376MW at 13 sites across the country.
KEPCO on Tuesday celebrated its installation of ESS for frequency regulation with 150 guests from related public institutions, academic community, labs and industry at an event held at the Gimje substation.
Unlike the common ESS that has the only function of power storage, the use of the ESS for frequency regulation can make it possible to maintain a constant power like a generator, allowing higher-quality electricity yield and lower generating cost.
KEPCO estimates about 62 billion won ($55.6 million) in power purchasing cost would be saved every year from running ESS regulating facilities. It also plans to further develop ESS infrastructure for output stabilization from wind and solar power generators.
