Samsung Electronics will have to pay Apple Inc. almost $120 million in penalty for patent infringement after the U.S. Supreme Court turned down the Korean smartphone maker’s appeal in a long-running court battle with its archrival Apple Inc. on Monday (local time).

The years-long legal fight of the two world’s top smartphone makers started in May 2014 when Apple filed a lawsuit against Samsung Electronics for violating its patents for key features including slide-to-unlock, autocorrect and quick links with federal court in San Jose, California. The court ruled in favor of Apple, ordering Samsung to pay $119.6 million for infringing on Apple’s patents. The ruling was overturned in February 2016 by a panel of three judges of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit based in Washington D.C., but later in October 2016, full 11 judges on the same court reinstated the first ruling. Samsung lodged an appeal to the Supreme Court in March.

In a separate patent dispute, the U.S. Supreme Court in December 2016 overturned an appeals court ruling that ordered Samsung to pay $399 million in damages to Apple for infringing on Apple’s design patents.

The two have been accusing one another for violating their patents and in 2014 agreed to drop all patent disputes outside the United States.

Shares of Samsung Electronics closed Tuesday at 2,805,000 won, down 0.5 percent or 14,000 won from the previous session.
