South Korea’s Hanwha Group has won a bid to build what could become the world’s largest floating solar plant in Dangjin, South Chungcheong Province in Korea.

According to the Korean conglomerate on Thursday, a consortium of Hanwha General Chemical Co. and Korea Midland Power Co. was named the preferred bidder for a 100-megawatt (MW) floating solar plant project proposed by state-run Korea Rural Community Corp.

The consortium will begin construction of the plant in 2019 with an aim to start operation in 2020.

Once completed, it is expected to beat China’s 40-MW floating solar plant in Anhui as the largest floating solar plant in the world. It would also be the biggest solar farm in Korea, a title currently claimed by the 40-MW plant in Yeongwol County, Gangwon Province.

The new plant will generate 100 MW of electricity, which is enough to power 140,000 households or the entire Dangjin city, the company said.

Cha Moon-hwan, head of Hanwha Solar Power, the solar power unit of Hanwha General Chemical, expected the new floating solar power farm to help the government meet its goal to boost renewable energy use in the country.

Korea’s liberal President Moon Jae-in is pushing forward a new energy policy that shifts away from coal and nuclear power to natural gas and renewables. The government pledged to raise the renewable energy portion of the country’s electricity supply to 20 percent by 2030.
