Samsung Electronics Co. will combine its hardware and software research centers in South Korea to create a global research & development hub that will orchestrate development of future technologies by various R&D centers scattered across the world.

The Korean tech giant said on Thursday that it will merge its Digital Media & Communications (DMC) R&D Center, which is currently responsible for advanced research in set business, and Software Center to launch Samsung Research. The new organization will oversee the company’s 24 research bases across the world that employ about 20,000 engineers in total and lead them in developing innovative new technologies that would help the tech company well prepare the era of the fourth industrial revolution.

The expanded research center will be headed by Kim Hyun-suk, president and head of consumer electronics division. It is the first time for a president-level executive to take the helm of a research center instead of an executive vice president.

Under the direction by the new R&D hub with cohesive goals, Samsung Electronics will aim to speed up the development of future convergence technologies, as well as artificial intelligence, Internet of Things, and security technologies, considered core technologies in the fourth industrial revolution era.

The company expected that the merger of the DMC R&D Center that was under consumer electronics division with Software Center that was under information technology (IT) and mobile division would enhance overall status and functions of the company’s R&D organization.
