Samsung Electronics, which stole the top position in the semiconductor market from Intel this year, has kept up a safe lead in the smartphone market as well.

A new report from Strategy Analytics on Friday showed that the South Korean tech giant sold more smartphones than any other company in the third quarter, claiming 21.2 percent of the global smartphone market. This marks its third straight quarter at the top.

The company sold 83.4 million units of smartphones in the July-September period, up 11 percent on year, driven by burgeoning demand in India and Latin America for budget A, J series as well as its premium S series, according to the market research firm.

Apple came second with a 11.9 percent share, slightly up from previous quarter’s 11.4 percent. China’s Huawei followed with 9.9 percent, down 0.8 percentage point from the second quarter.

The report predicted the horserace between Apple and Huawei to become fiercer next year.

China’s Oppo and Xiaomi came next with 8 percent and 7 percent, respectively. Xiaomi saw its share jump from 3.9 percent a year ago.

Global smartphone shipment in the third quarter grew 5 percent on year to 393.1 million units, according to the industry tracker.

The contest in the premium segment is expected to be tighter in the fourth quarter as big makers all released new models.
