South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Wednesday urged Korean enterprises active overseas to help the country overcome the worst-ever youth unemployment.

In his video opening address at the 16th World Korean Business Convention, the biggest networking event for Korean businesses at home and abroad, Moon asked the network to vitalize its internship program to provide opportunities for young Koreans who have trouble finding jobs at home.

The event kicked off its three-day run at Changwon Exhibition Convention Center in Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province. This year’s convention opened under the slogan “Better Hansang (Korean business) for Better Korea,” bringing together some 1,500 government officials and Korean entrepreneurs at home and abroad, including Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-hwa, Changwon Mayor Ahn Sang-soo and Maekyung Media Group Chairman Chang Dae-whan.

“Korean enterprises that are active overseas can help breed young Koreans to be global talents,” he said.

The convention will hold its recruitment event “Hansang & the Young, Go Together!” where businesses would pick up 100 new intern hires on the spot and provide business and investment advice for young entrepreneurs wanting to go global.

“Korean business networks will work together to find ways to contribute to the national economy,” said Yim Do-jae, chairman of the World Korean Business Convention.

Moon also expressed his respect for the Korean businessmen venturing into new markets outside Korea during difficult times and sharing their hard-won expertise with other aspiring entrepreneurs. “They are true patriots in that they are continuously working to push Korea’s economic boundary,” he said.
