South Korea’s LG Electronics Inc. has completed construction of a research and development center in Changwon, its home appliances manufacturing base in South Gyeongsang Province, Korea.

The company on Thursday celebrated the opening of the R&D center two and a half years after breaking ground in March 2015. The 20-story building with two underground floors sitting on an area of 51,000 square meters can host more than 1,500 researchers.

The R&D center installed with cutting-edge equipment, such as 3D printers, allows each researcher a 40 percent more spacious space to conduct their study than the existing center. “Changwon R&D center will help LG Electronics to cement its top position in the global home appliances market,” the company’s vice chairman Jo Seong-jin said. “Changwon facilities will be center of our efforts to lead the world in the appliances sector.”

LG Electronics designed the center as an environmentally-friendly building that uses energy from indoor lighting and geothermal heat for air conditioning. The center boasts high energy efficiency as it is equipped with an automatic energy control system that enables comprehensive monitoring and management of its energy equipment.

The company recently announced a plan to refurbish the Changwon complex into a smart facility by 2022 with an investment of 600 billion won ($531.5 million).
