South Korea’s top automaker Hyundai Motor Co. seeking alternative revenue base amid sagging sales in China has formed an internal task team to expand in the Southeast Asian market.

Hyundai Motor said on Wednesday that it launched a task force for the ASEAN region under its Asia, the Middle East and Africa section in the overseas sales department. The task force will carry out market research, study regulations, seek marketing network and venture investment opportunities in the region.

The 10-member taskforce team would be headed by Jung Bang-sun, the head of the Asia, the Middle East and Africa section who is familiar with the region as a former head of Hyundai Motor outlet in India.

Hyundai Motor last year sold 3.16 million units of vehicles in the ASEAN region, accounting for 3.8 percent of its total sales of 84 million units in the global market. There is a huge potential as the region is home to a population of 630 million and their economies growing at an annual pace of four to five percent.
