Kim In-ho, the chairman of Korea International Trade Association (KITA) that represents South Korea’s traders and exporters, offered to step down with four months left in his three-year term.

According to the KITA on Tuesday, Kim has handed in his resignation to the board of directors at its board meeting held at Korea World Trade Center in Seoul. Kim, who in 1997 served as senior secretary for economic affairs for President Kim Young-sam, was recruited by former President Park Geun-hye to head the trade group in February, 2015.

“I am sorry to leave the organization with just four months left in my term. But I think it is best that I make way for a fresh start for the organization,” he said.

It has been customary for state and public organization heads to step down under a new president as top seats in public institutions are usually handed out as rewards for campaign contribution.

Kim has been credited for broadening the scope of KITA’s role through the construction of MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions) sectors in Jamsil, Seoul and the reorganization of Korea World Trade Center.
