South Korea’s food making conglomerate Daesang Corp. has successfully developed L-Histidine, an essential amino acid, for the first time in Korea and third in the world following Japan’s Ajinomoto Co. and Kyowa Hakko, the company said on Tuesday.
L-Histidine, rich in fish, is known to be effective in reducing fatigue, boosting immune system, preventing skin diseases, improving eyesight and helping children’s growth. It is widely used in medicines, food supplements and animal feed. It is also in high demand in the fish feed market as it helps fish to find feed easily by improving vision.
The Korean company said it already signed contracts with some global feed making companies to supply its L-Histidine during the research and development period.
The global L-Histidine market, currently worth 3,000 tons or 100 billion won ($88.7 million) a year, is growing rapidly by more than 20 percent every year.
Daesang is aimed to achieve a 30 percent share in the global market by 2020.
“We will focus on expanding our market share in the world with our outstanding fermenting technology and manufacturing facilities,” said Lee Hee-byung, group leader of Daesang’s material business unit. “We will strengthen business portfolio of our material business.”
