Samsung Group’s retired chief executive officers plan to file a petition with the Seoul High Court that began appeals trial of the group’s de facto head Jay Y. Lee who was sentenced five years in prison for multiple charges including bribery.

The group’s ex-CEOs said on Sunday that they are preparing a petition to appeal that Lee was wrongfully convicted of bribery and the court should overturn the verdict announced in August by the lower Seoul District Court.

“As a person who has an experience in leading Samsung Group’s management, I’d like to appeal that convicting Lee of bribery is unfair,” said an unnamed retired CEO of a Samsung’s affiliate. The former CEOs also said that people have too many misunderstandings of Samsung’s management.

Unlike the group’s expectation that Lee could be found not guilty at the lower court, he was sentenced five years in jail for bribery and other charges related to a massive corruption scandal that removed former President Park Geun-hye.

Lee began an appeal of the five-year jail term for corruption in the High Court last week. The appellate court is expected to rule by January.
