Struggling not lose its foothold in the world’s largest automobile market despite waning sales, South Korea’s Hyundai Motor Group opened its first global big data center in China to spur development in connected cars and better cope with the needs of Chinese consumers.

South Korea’s largest automaker at the opening ceremony on Tuesday said it will dig into big data source to customize new cars for the Chinese market and team up with other IT companies to reinforce capabilities in connected technology.

The center is located in the southwestern province of Guizhou, a big data cluster complex that also drew global tech companies like Apple, Alibaba and IBM. The Korean conglomerate would be the first automaker to run a data center there. Hyundai will share the five-story building with another tenant - Chinese search giant Baidu.

Hyundai Motor has chosen China for its first big data hub because of its overwhelming population as the more the people, the greater information it can draw upon.

Big data analysis is crucial for developing connected cars as it can be used to provide tailored services for individual consumers.

The company has linked up with China Unicom, the country’s second-largest mobile carrier with 400 million subscribers, to study the data.

Car sales of Hyundai Motor Group have nearly halved this year in China due to a diplomatic row triggered by the deployment of an American anti-missile shield on Korean soil, which Beijing vehemently opposes for security reasons. The automaker said it is aiming for a comeback with a new lineup targeted specifically for the Chinese market by the end of the year.
