Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and Mercedes-Benz have issued a voluntary recall of 4,419 vehicles in South Korea to fix defects in air bags and seat belt pretensioners, the transport ministry said Thursday.

Fiat Chrysler will recall a total of 4,144 vehicles including 3,856 units of three models - the Jeep Compass, Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Caliber - to repair a defect in the occupant restraint controller (ORC), an airbag control module that is activated during crash situations.

It will also recall 288 Fiat Freemont sport utility vehicles (SUV) to replace defective wiring that can chafe against parts of the steering wheel trim, potentially causing inadvertent air bag deployment and unintended wiper operation.

Mercedes-Benz has issued a recall of 275 vehicles in 21 models, including the C220d, S350 and E300, due to loose seat belt pretensioners, which are intended to adequately restrain the passenger’s body in the event of a crash.

FCA Korea will start repairs from September 14 and Mercedes-Benz Korea from September 27.

Owners can visit the online recall site run by the transport ministry (www.car.go.kr) or call 080-357-2500 to check if their vehicles are part of the recall or to find out more about the defects.
