World’s largest smartphone maker Samsung Electronics Co. may be moving towards a disgraceful exit from the Chinese market as it helplessly loses against domestic brands, according to a study.

Apple stayed bestseller as of the second quarter with Chinese owning 171.1 million of its phones, showed latest report by the Chengdu outlet of the Korea International Trade Association on Wednesday.

Chinese makers Huawei and Oppo tagged closely behind Apple with 132 million units and 124 million units, respectively. Oppo zoomed to the third from sixth a year ago.

Other China-born brands Vivo and Xiaomi also fared well with 108 million units and 68 million units, respectively.

Samsung Electronics recorded only 48 million units and became the sixth-most owned smartphones in China, down from the fourth in the first quarter last year.

Local Chinese brands like Oppo and Vivo sold better with their affordable full-spec phones, said the report.

Budget phones priced below 2,000 yuan ($305.60) took up a 62.5 percent share of the Chinese mobile phone market in the second quarter. The premium phones costing 4,000 yuan or more comprised 6.4 percent of the entire market, where Apple was the absolute winner.

Local brands were preferred by the younger generation aged from 16 to 25. Of Oppo phone users, 43.3 percent were from the youth group and Vivo 46.9 percent.

The portion of customers willing to repurchase the same branded phone was only 7.2 percent for Samsung Electronics in the second quarter while that of Apple reached 53.4 percent. The portion of loyal customers was also higher for Oppo and Vivo with nearly 25 percent.
