The memory chip in a quarter of century will beat human brain processing ability, declared the division head of the world’s largest chipmaker Samsung Electronics Co.

“In 20 years, a solid state drive would be able to accommodate all the information in a human brain, said Kim Ki-nam, president of Samsung Electronics Co.’s semiconductor business in his keynote speech at the Korea-Germany National Academy of Engineering conference held in Seoul on Monday.

SSD has been fast replacing hard-disk drive to store memory in PCs and notebooks on top of big datacenters.

“The chip industry will bring about unprecedented changes in the economy and society through the process of fourth industrial revolution,” he said, defining the fourth industrial revolution as a digital marriage of the physical and cyber world.

Devices connected to the internet already outnumbered human population in 2008. By 2020, the number would reach 50 billion. “Our lives would become unimaginable, entirely connected with smart devices and infrastructure,” he said.

The explosive demand in data would demand electricity power requiring 40 additional nuclear generators, which is the reason why the industry must work more rigorously to come up with power-saving technology, he said.
