South Korea’s largest power plant equipment maker Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Co. would for the first time be generating power from a solar power plant equipped with energy storage system (ESS).

According to Doosan Heavy on Thursday, it has completed the construction of the 300 kilowatt (KW) solar farm with an ESS of a 1 megawatt hour (MWh) capacity on the rooftop of its headquarters in Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province.

An ESS-linked solar power plant stores excess electricity in an ESS to transfer it on an as-needed basis. It can stably supply power, compared to the existing solar power plant swayed by weather conditions. It is the first time for Doosan Heavy to run a solar farm merged with ESS technology.

The equipment maker hopes its new growth engine ESS will create synergy with the power plant business. For the ESS technology, Doosan Heavy applied the control system software of its unit Doosan GridTech that it renamed from 1Energy Systems upon its acquisition last year.

“Doosan Heavy will start to build more ESS-linked solar farms at its five factory sites including Doosan Infracore’s Incheon Plant and Doosan Corp. Electro-Materials’ Iksan factory site to release the best products by accumulating experiences and technical know-how,” said Song Yong-jin, senior vice president at Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction.

Doosan Heavy has taken full charge of completing the construction including engineering, tools and materials installation and commissioning and continues to do its operation and maintenance job, said an official.

Since March, Doosan Heavy has cooperated with Korea South-East Power Co. to establish the microgrid system at Doosan Engine’s Changwon factory by using the 100 kW-class solar farm with an ESS of a 4.2 MWh capacity.
