South Korean government will create a simulation city in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province, where self-driving vehicles will be free to roam around, by the end of next year.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said on Tuesday that it will invest 11 billion won ($9.8 million) to build an autonomous car testing complex ‘K-City’ in Hwaseong, south of Seoul, by the end of next year. The groundbreaking of the K-City will take place on Wednesday.

The K-City commanding a 320,000-square-meter site will house an expressway, interchanges, railroads, underpass, and tunnels and parking spaces common in real urban setting. The roads will have stops, potholes, and narrow pathways.

The test ground will be fitted with latest communication equipments including fourth-generation (4G) Long Term Evolution (LTE) network.

The land ministry plans to build the highway zone first by October this year and add on others to ready the K-City by the end of next year for engineers, startups, and enterprises to freely test out their self-driving technologies.
