South Korea’s SK Engineering & Construction Co. (SK E&C) announced on Tuesday it has won a 230 billion won ($210 million) deal to build a large petrochemical plant in Thailand.

The project aims to construct a polyol plant with an annual yield of 130,000 tons at the Hemaraj industrial complex in Rayong, 150 kilometers southeast of the capital Bangkok. Polyol is the main material of polyurethanes, a base material for making insulation materials for buildings, interior materials for cars and home appliances. Recently, the demand for polyol has been rapidly growing in Asia.

Three companies jointly ordered the project: PTT Global Chemical, a subsidiary of Thailand state-owned oil and gas company PTT, Japanese chemicals manufacturer Sanyo Chemical Industries Ltd. and Toyota Tsusho Corporation. SK E&C will complete the construction project as an EPCC (Engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning) deal within 35 months from its commencement date.

The Korean company beat out multiple bidders including the consortium of Toyo Engineering Corp. and Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co. as well as Korean companies. SK E&C landed 29 deals in Thailand since its first project on building a crude oil terminal at Si Racha in 1991.
