E-Mart Inc., a discount store unit of South Korea’s retail conglomerate Shinsegae Group, joined hands with Samsung Electronics Co. to deploy digital signage that would help promote products better based on the analysis of consumer big data.

E-Mart said on Monday that it signed a memorandum of understanding with Samsung Electronics to cooperate on incorporating big data based marketing technology at its big-box stores. For a start, E-Mart will replace 80 percent of its existing in-store advertising boards at its Jukjeon branch, south of Seoul, with Samsung Electronics’ smart signage system that will allow the retailer to change and update advertisements displayed on the digital screen based on customer data remotely from its central office.

The retailer plans to spend about 20 billion won ($17.8 million) in total to expand the application of the digital signage system to 30 stores next year.

In October, the company will also install a system that analyzes customer’s shopping patterns like a shopper’s course of movement within store and apply it to its merchandise display strategy and inventory management.

The retailer also plans to employ an advertisement system that displays customized marketing messages that best fit the customer’s needs based on the customer’s gender and age group information acquired via face recognition technology.
