South Korea’s largest automaker Hyundai Motor Co. on Sunday unveiled a rear seat alarm technology that sends alerts to prevent leaving children or pets unattended in the car.

The rear seat alarm system works by detecting opening of rear doors and movement in the back seat. The system detects if a rear door opens before car starts and whether it is opened again when the driver turns off the ignition and gets off.

If the system detects passengers in the backseat without driver’s presence, it sends off a series of alarming messages from first displaying a warning message on dashboard and playing audio message to blinking emergency light and tooting horn as well as sending text message to the driver’s mobile phone.

The rear seat alarm system will help prevent parents leaving babies unattended in the backseat and reduce related accidents, said a Hyundai Motor official. The system is designed to detect not only children but also pets left in the backseat.

Hyundai Motor plans to start the commercial use of the alarm system next year and upgrade the technology to detect passengers with little movement like sleeping baby.

The automaker on the same day also introduced a ball-type seatbelt clip that rotates to prevent seatbelt from twisting and fastens baby more securely.

At 10:38 a.m. on Monday, shares of Hyundai Motor were up 0.35 percent at 145,000 won ($129.30).
