South Korea’s major hypermarkets, department stores and grocery stores said Friday that they have removed all German and Dutch processed meat from their shelves in response to the Hepatitis E virus scare mainly stemming from the two European countries.

The product cast out is a Chungjungone bacon brand from Daesang Corp.

A Lotte Mart official said that the store does not sell sausages imported from either Germany or Holland but has found processed meat products made from pork based in both countries. Sales of these items have been suspended, he added.

Emart removed a smoked bacon brand from its own Peacock label when it identified that it was made from German-based ingredients.

Department stores including Lotte, Hyundai and Shinsegae said they do not sell German or Dutch meat but decided to withdraw Spanish meat products to quell consumer concerns.
