South Korea’s LG Electronics Inc is building a production site to supply parts for electric vehicles (EV) in Michigan, home to LG Chem’s EV battery factory and American automobile industry.

According to LG Electronics on Wednesday, it would invest 28.5 billion won ($25 million) to construct an EV components manufacturing site in the Detroit suburb of Hazel Park, Michigan. The plant, commanding a space of 215,000 square meters, will be ready by the first quarter of 2018.

The early output would be battery packs. The plant will manufacture other parts like motor, the company said.

Lee Woo-jong, president of the Vehicle Components Company of LG Electronics said, “LG’s initiative to develop and produce world-class EV subassemblies in the United States represents a key pillar of our strategy to be the best technology partner to U.S. automakers.”

The company hopes to create synergy with LG Chem, an affiliate of LG Group, by cooperation with its Holland factory. LG Electronics’ vehicle component (VC) North American center is also located in Troy, Michigan, to aid marketing on U.S. carmakers.

LG Electronics has supplied 11 essential components including driving motors, inverters and battery packs to GM for its electric car Chevrolet Bolt EV released at the end of last year in the U.S. and this year in Korea.

The company which has been losing money from smartphone business has been investing in the vehicle component business. The division last year generated 51.3 percent growth in sales to 2.773 trillion won. Sales in the first year gained another 42.7 percent to 1.759 trillion won in the first half.

Shares of LG Electronics Wednesday closed 2.38 percent up at 77,500 won from the previous session.
