Hyundai and Kia beat Honda to rank second in global green car market

South Korea’s top automaker Hyundai Motor Co. and its sister company Kia Motors Corp. commanded the second largest share in the global environmentally-friendly car market during the first half of this year thanks to brisk sales of its electric cars and hybrid cars.

Hyundai Motor Group that runs the two automakers had hoped to reach the second rank in the eco-friendly category by 2020.

According to global market research firm IHS Markit Ltd on Tuesday, Hyundai and Kia sold 102,480 units of eco-friendly vehicles during the first half ended June, more than doubling from 45,324 units of a year ago to near last year’s annual sales record of 107,822 units.

By car type, sales of electric cars showed the biggest growth of 151.7 percent (9,936 from 3,948), plug-in hybrid cars 136.4 percent (1,792 from 758), and hybrid cars 123.7 percent (90,659 from 40,518).

As a result, the Korean carmakers beat out Honda, who sold 80,780 units, and came second in the global green car market after Toyota that sold 598,136 units.

Hyundai and Kia made big headway in EV market. They took up the sixth largest share following Renault-Nissan Alliance with sales of 44,393 units, Tesla 37,842 units, BAIC 17,033 units, Zotye 12,084 units and BYD 10,736 units. The Korean carmakers that ranked 11th last year moved up five notches, outpacing Geely, Jianghuai, Chery, Jiangling and Volkswagen.

Among the top 10 automakers with vehicle sales of two million or more in the global market, Hyundai and Kia climbed up one notch to the second in the global electric car market.

In the hybrid car market, Hyundai elbowed out Honda with sales of 90,233 units with its own record of 90,659 units to trail Toyota’s 587,147 units.
