Samsung Electronics Co. Tuesday introduced its new portable solid-state drive (PSSD) T5 that boasts faster transfer speed up to 540 megabytes (MB) per second compared to the predecessor T3’s 450 MB/s.

SSD is a storage device that transfers data at faster speeds than a hard disk drive (HDD) thanks to V-NAND flash memory technology that ensures its higher transfer speed than a motor fitted in a HDD. The SSD is rapidly replacing the HDD in the external memory storage market.

According to Samsung Electronics, the T5 applying 64-layer V-NAND flash memory technology boasts maximum 4.9 times faster read and write speeds than the HDD. The T5’s 540 MB/s speed also allows it to store a three gigabytes (GB) movie in seven seconds, 20 percent larger storage capacity per second than its predecessor T3 with a transfer speed of 450 MB/s.

Like the T3, the T5 will be available in four models such as 2 terabytes (TB), 1TB, 500GB and 250GB. The T5 that features lightweight, shock-resistant design is smaller than an average business card, with dimensions of 74x57.3x10.5 mm and weight of 51 grams.

The T5 will go on official sale in 50 countries this year, said Kim Un-soo, senior vice president of brand product market at Samsung Electronics’ Memory Business.
