South Korean startup DeepBio Inc. has successfully developed an artificial intelligence (AI) system to help diagnose prostate cancer.

The system can analyze microscopic images of a sample taken from a prostatic lesion by comparing tissue patterns and cell shapes to confirm the diagnosis with an ultrasound, x-ray, or CT exam.

It can significantly reduce diagnostic errors and exam deviation arising from individual differences in experience of healthcare professionals, said Kim Sun-woo, DeepBio’s chief executive. The new solution has a very low margin of diagnostic error and the company will soon be releasing concrete data with a research paper, Kim added.

DeepBio is working on a paper on prostate cancer diagnosis using AI with Kangbuk Samsung Hospital.

It is also on track to apply for marketing approval of the system at home and abroad with a goal to generate sales within three years after launching. The company expects the AI-based cancer diagnosis solution will be highly demanded overseas where there are few pathologists who can interpret the biopsy specimen.
