Riding on the popularity of latest Galaxy series, Samsung Electronics Co. moved up two notches to command the third largest market share in Japan’s wireless market in the second quarter.

According to data from market research firm Strategy Analytics (SA) on Tuesday, Samsung Electronics’ smartphone shipment to Japan reached 700,000 units from April to June to take up 8.8 percent of smartphone sales in Japan during the period.

Apple Inc. remained the predominant leader, selling 3.3 million phones and commanding a share of 41.3 percent. Sony was second with sales of 1.3 million units and a share of 16.3 percent.

Sharp trailed Samsung with a market share of 6.3 percent and Fujitsu with 6.1 percent.

The three at the bottom of top five enjoyed greater shipment during the second quarter as Apple’s share plunged by 10 percentage points from the previous quarter as consumers waited for the 10-year anniversary phone in the third quarter.

Samsung Electronics that kept up over 10 percent share in the Japanese market until mid-2013 fell behind Japanese players in recent years.

Its share more than doubled in the second quarter from 3.8 percent in the first quarter thanks to brisk sales of Galaxy S8 series in Japan.

Overall, Samsung reclaimed top position in the global smartphone market and ranked first in the North American in the second quarter.
