Doosan Enpure wins $27 mn water treatment plant deal in UK

The contract was signed with Severn Trent Water, a British water supplier, to build an eco-friendly plant that transforms wastewater into energy, said Doosan Heavy on Monday.
“We’re building on our strength in seawater desalination to gain a foothold in the waste-to-energy business,” said Yoon Seok-won, head of Water BG Group at Doosan Heavy. “We plan to tap our technological expertise to advance into the renewable energy market.”
In 2012, Doosan Heavy, the world’s largest provider of seawater desalination solutions, acquired the British water treatment company Enpure to reinforce its water business portfolio.
This is Doosan Enpure’s second contract with Severn Trent Water. In June, the company closed a 87.5 billion-won deal to supply water purification facilities in Birmingham.
The water treatment plant uses gas emanated from sewage sludge, the residual byproduct during sewage treatment, to produce up to 1 megawatt of energy, which is enough to power as many as 1000 homes. The sludge is first dewatered to reduce its liquid content, with microorganisms then mixed in to produce the methane gas that is used as energy source to produce electricity or heat.
The plant will be built in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, 70 kilometers south of Manchester. It is due for completion in 2019.
According to U.K.-based water industry observer GWI, the global water treatment market is valued at 880 trillion won this year. It is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 3 percent to reach 940 billion won by 2020.
