The world’s two largest smartphone makers Samsung Electronics Co. and Apple Inc. would have to look over their shoulders from the pace of ascension by Chinese rivals.

According to data from market research firm Strategy Analytics (SA) on Wednesday, Samsung Electronics maintained its lead in the global smartphone market in the second quarter as its shipment of 79.5 million units commanded a share of 22.1 percent. Its second-quarter shipment was up 2 percent on year while its share edged down 0.6 percentage point.

Samsung Electronics’ market share recovered after the face-losing exit of fire-prone Galaxy Note 7 through the follow-up Galaxy S8 series, SA said.

Apple came second with a market share of 11.4 percent and shipments of 41 million. Its shipment rose 1 percent and its share slipped 0.4 percentage point from a year-ago period.

Their loss was Chinese makers’ gain.

Huawei narrowed the gap with Apple by lifting its market share to 10.7 percent in the second quarter from 9.4 percent in the previous year.

Oppo and its P10 and Mate 9 models were successful in China, India and Europe. Its market share in the second quarter was 8.2 percent, up 2.9 percentage points from a year earlier.

Xiaomi returned to the top five list with a 6.4 percent share in the second quarter versus 4.3 percent in the year-ago period thanks to explosive growth in India.

The combined share of 25.3 percent (up from 19 percent a year ago) of the three Chinese brands outsized Samsung’s in the second quarter.
