Samsung Electronics Co. developed high-speed LTE modem technology that enables smartphone users to download 2-hour-long, high-definition video in only 10 seconds.

The South Korean tech giant said on Monday that it succeeded in developing LTE modem technology for its next-generation mobile processors that support 6 carrier aggregation(CA). The CA technology combining a given number of component carriers with various bandwidths offers faster and more stable data transfers. The company plans to apply the new LTE modem technology to its new mobile application processors that it would start mass producing at the end of this year.

According to Anritsu, Japan-based telecommunication measuring instrument provider, Samsung’s 6CA-supported LTE modem technology achieved a maximum downlink speed of 1.2 gigabits per second (Gbps), which is 20 percent improvement compared to Samsung’s predecessor model. The 1.2 Gbps downlink speed is as fast as downloading a full-length movie in HD resolution within 10 seconds.

The company claims its 6CA-supported LTE modem technology is the first of its kind in the industry. The speed improvement was driven by its 256-QAM (Quadrature Amplitude Modulation) downlink technology coupled with adoption of 4×4 Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output (MIMO) scheme. Also, it applied Licensed-Assisted Access (eLAA) technology to allow telecommunications operators fully utilize both licensed and unlicensed radio-frequency spectrum.

“With the increase of high-quality online content services, the demand for high-performance LTE modems continue to rise as well,” said Hur Woon-haing, vice president of System LSI Protocol Development at Samsung Electronics. “The 1.2Gbps maximum downlink speed with 6CA support highlights Samsung’s leading design capabilities and well-positions Samsung for the upcoming 5G era.”
