Although a global gaming powerhouse, the industry in Korea remains poorly-paying and overworked segment as more than 95 percent of South Korean IT service companies was found incompliant with domestic labor regulations, government finding showed.

Of total 83 IT services enterprises that came under scrutiny, 29 did not obey working hours. The ratio was six out of eight in the gaming industry, said the Ministry of Employment and Labor.

The ministry investigated working conditions at 83 IT service providers for three months from March after two gamers died last year from overwork. Household game names Nexon Co. and NCSoft were included.

Netmarble Games, where the deaths took place last year, was excluded as all of its 12 units had come under separate probe earlier in the year.

“Working 12 hours beyond the legal work hours was common in gaming companies,” said a ministry official.

Because overtime and weekend work were common, compensations often have been negligent, he added.

The ministry also found discriminative actions against agency and temporary workers.

After the probe, 95.7 percent of the companies received fines and other disciplinary actions for violating the labor related regulations.
