The South Korean government will do away with a charging time restriction for electric vehicles, allowing all types of EVs, including large-capacity Tesla, to be eligible to receive government subsidy.

The Ministry of Environment said on Monday it will remove the outmoded rule and will instead raise charging speed thresholds to reflect technological advances.

The old regulation to limit a charging time to 10 hours or less was introduced in 2012 when EVs began to be accessible to citizens. It had aimed to minimize consumer inconvenience by preventing unnecessarily lengthy hours spent on charging due to lack of technology.

Manufacturers had been required to provide a 60kwh-capacity battery to comply with the regulation, but new EVs with improved performance have been put on the road, making the rule obsolete.

“The charging time limit was based on the commuting readiness in the following morning for office going users in early days of EV availability,” said a ministry official. “But it became useless because of the advent of better performance EVs with longer range as well as associated charging infrastructure that is both fast and convenient.”

Tesla powered by large-capacity batteries and other EVs for longer distance travelling will also be eligible to receive government subsidy thanks to the regulation update.
