Shinsegae Food Inc., catering unit of South Korea’s leading retail conglomerate Shinsegae Group, will provide meals and snacks for the athletes, coaches and staff during the PyeongChang Winter Olympics 2018.
According to food distribution industry sources on Monday, the organizing committee for the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics picked Shinsegae Food as its official exclusive catering service provider that will be responsible for preparing meals for nearly 6,500 athletes, coaches and staff from 96 countries during the 17-day international sports event to be held in PyeongChang, mountain region in eastern South Korea in February next year. Two parties are scheduled to sign a contract on Thursday.
The company hopes its brand would gain greater international exposure through the Olympics event.
The retail conglomerate has vowed to grow Shinsegae Food, which has mostly focused on the domestic market up until now, as a global food service company with revenue of 5 trillion won ($4.3 billion) by 2023. The company expected that through its participation in the Olympics, it will be able to accumulate new recipes by learning new diets and food preferences of different cultures, prerequisites that will enable it to achieve its goal.
