Regardless of sharp deterioration in sales, the union of South Korea’s largest automaker Hyundai Motor Co. threatened to go on a strike this summer, a ritual that went on for the last five years.

Hyundai Motor’s labor union announced collapse of bargaining talks with the management after the latter failed to respond to its demands by Thursday.

The union would have to apply for coordination with the National Labor Relations Commissions and go on a vote to decide on striking.

The union would be holding internal executive meetings Monday and declare the strike decision the following day. Union members will vote on the decision Thursday and Friday.

Last year, Hyundai Motor’s labor union held a vote to go on strike in 8 days after it declared a breakdown in negotiations. Strike gained backing by 76.54 percent of labor members.

Last year, the automaker’s labor union went on a strike 24 times including its first full-day walkout in 12 years over salary dispute. The union also rejected to work overtime on weekends on 12 occasions. The disruption cost the carmaker 3.1 trillion won.

Industry sources note that this year’s management-labor negotiations will be even tougher to get through as both parties need to reach terms not only on wages but on collective bargaining agreement.
