The South Korean government is in discussion to extend the first week of October to a 10-day national holiday as part of efforts to boost domestic consumption and the economy.

By making Oct. 2 one-time holiday, the three-day Chuseok holiday starting from Oct 3 would be extended with substitution holiday on Friday, the following weekend, and Hangul Day on Monday to give Koreans full 10-day break.

Kim Jin-pyo, chairman of the presidential advisory commission on state affairs planning in a radio interview on Thursday said, the government is discussing lengthening exceptional holiday period in the first week of October. The possibility is almost certain, he said.

The long holiday will give people extra time with the family during the traditional family-gathering Chuseok holiday and also can aid consumption, Kim said.
