The number of employees working at Samsung Electronics’ operations in Korea and elsewhere fell last year for the first time in seven years mainly due to a large-scale restructuring in China and realignment of production workers in Latin America.

According to Samsung’s 2017 Sustainability Management Report released on Sunday, the number of Samsung Electronics employees in 80 countries totaled 308,745 persons last year, down 5.2 percent a year earlier. Domestic employees were down 3.8 percent to 93,204 persons, while overseas employees were slashed 5.8 percent to 215,541. The company said the sale of its printing business to HP of the U.S. led to the reduced number in domestic employees and the production worker realignment in Asia affected its global payrolls last year.

The number of Samsung Electronics employees in China is now 37,070 persons, down a whopping 17.5 percent from a year ago. In contrast, the number of employees in North America reaches nearly 26,000, up 8.5 percent from a year ago.
