Samsung Elec likely crowned as world’s top technology hardware maker

The world’s largest memory chip and smartphone maker on Friday reported its historic three-month operating profit of 14 trillion won ($12 billion) on sales of 60 trillion won for the second quarter ended June, having profited 23.3 percent for every product it sold during the period.
The company has not released earnings by segment, but its profit margin from semiconductor division alone is estimated to have reached 45 percent in the second quarter, far outstripping semiconductor competitor Intel which is projected to have made $3.89 billion from sales of chips.
Analysts believe more than half of its $12 billion profit came from semiconductor division.
Nomura Securities estimated that Samsung Electronics’ chip sales reached $15.1 billion in the second quarter versus $14.4 billion of Intel.
Samsung Electronics’ smartphone archrival Apple is estimated by the market to have earned $10.55 billion from operation in the April-June period. Unless it stuns the market, Samsung Electronics would have performed better than the world’s top technology company in terms of market cap.
The company also would have earned more than the four U.S. stock bellwethers (Facebook, Amazon, Netflix, and Google) whose combined operating profit in the first quarter was $11.15 billion.
At 1:30 p.m. shares of Samsung Electronics were down 6,000 won, or 0.3%, at 2,397,000 won.
