TVStorm Co., a Korean provider of middleware solutions for media convergence, has teamed up with California-based system-on-chip maker Sigma Designs to develop chips customized for Google’s new smart big-screen platform Android TV.

TVStorm said on Monday it has entered into an agreement with the U.S. chipmaker to produce the system-on-chip (SoC) - a microchip that goes into small, complex devices with all the necessary parts on a single integrated circuit - to power the Android TV.

Earlier on March, TVStorm signed a systems integration contract with Google to obtain the license for Android TV.

Established in 1982 and based in Fremont, California, Sigma Designs is a provider of high-performance SoC semiconductor technologies for set-top boxes, high-definition televisions and media processors. The Nasdaq-listed company currently supplies its ultra high definition (UHD)-capable SoC products to some of the world’s leading set-top box and TV manufacturers.

TVStorm expects the partnership to shorten the lead time of its SoC solutions for Android TV and maximize exposure in the global market.

“The partnership is a broad recognition of our technological prowess in Android-based broadcasting convergence software,” said Jang Ho-yeon, chief executive of TVStorm. “We intend to step up our global marketing efforts in Southeast Asia and elsewhere.”
